Craig And The Record-Breaking Joseph Tour!
In the summer of 2007, Craig Chalmers was cast in the lead role in Bill Kenwright’s National Tour of Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat which entered the Guinness Book of Records as the longest running touring stage musical of all time having completed almost 20 years touring regional theatres in the UK.

Craig’s Joseph journey began in 2007 when he was one of the 12 finalists who appeared on BBC TV’s  Any Dream Will Do. The shows were broadcast live in the UK from 14th April to 9th June 2007 (and subsequently world-wide).
Craig impressed audiences of over 7 million week after week and despite finishing in fifth place, had caught the eye of impresario Kenwright who offered him the role of Joseph in the National Tour. The rigours of the cabaret circuit in Scotland had prepared Craig for what was ahead of him and was a key factor in Bill Kenwright’s decision to offer him this starring role. It was a decision which reaped benefits for both of them with record ticket sales and glowing reviews.
Being plucked from obscurity to stardom is a hot topic in the performing arts, but Lloyd Webber’s talent searches have identified and nurtured a distinct group of artists compared to other shows. Commenting on TV talent shows in May 2010, Serena Davies of The Daily Telegraph wrote:  “There’s only one set of shows where “talent” is a really meaningful description, which produce stars whose live performances can  command the emotions of large audiences six days a week, for months on end: Lloyd Webber’s series. Only here contestants must sing, dance and act to professional standards.”
Craig was an instant success and has now become one of the longest serving most loved Josephs in the history of the show. From his opening performance in Bromley on 20th August 2007 to his final night in Croydon on 16th July 2010 he performed in almost every major theatre in the UK (outside London) and also in Ireland

Joseph Memories

Any Dream Will Do gave Craig the chance he needed.  To quote from Sir Tim Rice’s Joseph lyrics: “Anyone from Anywhere can make it if they get a lucky break” – one of Craig’s favourite lines from the show.
From the sheer excitement of Saturday night live TV, to being cast in the lead role in the National Tour of Joseph plus a ‘one-night only’ concert at The London Palladium – Craig’s life was turned upside down.  Add in thousands of loyal fans all over the UK and you have a heady mix of memories from over three years of entertaining people.

Here are some of Craig’s favourite moments from his time in the spotlight written exclusively for the site:

 BBC Shows
"Obviously this was the start of it all for me and I would not have changed the experience for the world. It was extremely intense with constant rehearsals and pressure from the live shows, but it gave me the opportunity to learn so much every week. The whole BBC experience will remain special to me for the rest of my life. There will never be another Joseph programme, it was a one-off and I had a ball!"

Opening Night in Bromley

"I remember how nervous I was after a very intensive rehearsal period. Bill came into my dressing room to wish me luck and say that he was very proud of me, which helped the nerves ease and the adrenaline kick in. I don’t remember much about the performance, it flew by so quickly. I only remember that I didn’t fluff any of my words and I remember the incredible ovation the audience gave as I stood centre stage at the end of the show. That was a very powerful emotional feeling to know that I had come this far and I have since been lucky enough to enjoy this reaction in theatres all over the country."

"Craig Chalmers, one of the most popular finalists in the recent BBC series, Any Dream Will Do, takes the title role with his fabulous vocal skills, great feeling and lots of charisma." Northern Echo, Sunderland

"Craig is just perfect. Great voice, good looks,he pitched it just right. And with a standing ovation after the show, it was a struggle for him to leave the stage." Burton Mail, Derby

"Craig Chalmers as Joseph was a dreamboat in his coat of many colours with a voice to match."
News Shopper, Dartford

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber on Any Dream Will Do          Opening night in Bromley, Zoe Tyler and Bill Kenwright               Dream On at the London Palladium

"Confident, note-perfect and not displeasing to the eye! He is a worthy leading man, more than able to convey emotion through song." South Wales Argus

"As Joseph he conjures up all the dramatic qualities needed to take you on an emotional and uplifting journey."
Weston Mercury, Bristol

"He portrays Joseph's changing character more thoroughly than many others have done - from preening arrogance to despair, anger, renewed pride and ultimate forgiveness." The News, Portsmouth

Performing at The Playhouse, Edinburgh
"It was very special for me to perform in my hometown and knowing The Playhouse was such a massive seating capacity I couldn’t believe we could fill it for six weeks, ten shows a week! The only down part was the week when I was ill and fortunately that is the worst I have been for the rest of the Tour. The ovation on opening night blew my mind and all my family and friends got to see the show. Seeing my image and name up in lights outside The Playhouse is something I shall never forget."

OK! magazine shoot
"If someone said to me as I was packing up my gear after singing a cabaret set in a social club in winter 2007 that within a year I would be in a six-page spread in OK! Magazine, I would have asked them what medication they were on! It was so exciting and I was so happy with how the spread turned out. Jen was great as ever and given the fact that she has never modelled, she was a natural! Again, we got first class treatment all the way and I’m sure that when we are older, we will look back on that magazine shoot with a lot of fondness."

Although Craig is probably best known for his singing make no mistake his acting is also top notch he brings Joseph to life with a fantastic mix of emotions." Melton Times, Leicester

"Chalmers brings a down-to-earth naivety to his wide-eyed Joseph, sending fans hearts a-fluttering." Aberdeen Evening News

"His voice is very powerful, and not one slip was heard throughout, quite an achievement when the whole play is in song!" Denbeighshire Free Press, Llandudno

OK Magazine 8 April 2008

"His portrayal of Joseph struck exactly the right balance of vulnerability and heroism and he made the part entirely his own." UK Theatre.net, Sunderland

"Chalmers' stage presence was magnetic."
Eastern Daily Press

"Not only can that man sing - from the quiet emotional numbers to the big blast it out ballads Craig was right on the money." Melton Times

SECC/Daily Record shoot/Glasgow Christmas lights

"This was an amazing time for me, the Christmas switch-on was unreal – singing Any Dream Will Do on the big rigged stage to a packed George Square just before the fireworks. The S.E.C.C. was brilliant; the staff were amazing as were the people at McKenzie Menswear who specially made a Technicolor kilt for me – which I still have. (They are also doing my wedding kilt outfit but it won’t be in Technicolor!) The New Year Bash we had was such great fun with all the cast, my family and Jennifer all together – and I taught Jen how to Ceilidh dance!   The Daily Record shoot was just amazing, we got the full red carpet treatment staying in the absolutely beautiful Hotel du Vin in Glasgow. The clothes were amazing and Jennifer looked too stunning for words. Again, I couldn’t speak too highly of the treatment we got from all the people involved from the Daily Record and the hotel staff."

"And Craig proves that he is capable of playing to the biggest crowds as he got the Armadillo rocking so much it almost tipped into the Clyde." Glasgow Evening Times

"Thanks to his matinee idol good looks and seeming ease on stage, he has made a role that has been performed by many a more established star his own." Derby Telegraph

"With his charm, good looks and pop star voice, Craig is a dream Joseph."
Evening Times, Hamilton

"Golden boy Chalmers has a real presence, a touch of star quality that could well give him a musical theatre shelf life long after Joseph has finished its current run."
This is Nottingham
